Homemade Light Table

For the longest time I have been interested in getting my kids a light table. After searching on line for an inexpensive light table, I realized I wasn't going to be able to purchase one for under $300.00. Ouch!

Instead of biting the bullet and buying one of these tables, I realized I could make one instead. For a small amount of money, I put together a table that both of my kids can enjoy at the same time.

I went to Walmart and picked up a rubbermaid bucket ($14) and then went to Canadian Tire and bought 2 LCD, circular, battery operated lights ($8.00 each).
All we had to do next was put the lights in the bottom of the bucket, turn out the overhead lights and play.

Now for the best part...use your imagination. Think of anything that would be fun to use on a light table. We have played with stencils, transparent geometric blocks, animal x-rays, rice, and small circular transparent chips. The possibilities are endless and I look forward to exploring them with my kids.

  1. This is freaking genius. I have wanted a light table for my kids as well as the childcare centre I work at and as you say they are super expensive. You can then store the stuff for the light table in the rubbermaid container. I am so going to do this THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
