Homemade Butter

Make your own butter!! Seriously, try it. In our house, making butter actually started out as a science experiment.

I took a mason jar and filled it about half way with heavy cream. I then gave the jar to my 4 year old and told her to shake it.

Within minutes of some vigorous shaking, the cream had separated enough to be drained, salted and used on our breakfast toast.

So, here's what to do...

Pour some cream into mixing bowl, and mix it until it becomes whipped cream.  Then keep mixing it until it separates, and you can hear the butter solids sloshing around in the buttermilk. Pour out the buttermilk (you can save it and use it in other recipes) and pour 1/2 cup of water into the bowl with the butter solids.  Beat the butter again until any remaining buttermilk has released from the butter, and pour out the water.  Place the butter in a drainer and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Transfer into a bowl. If you like, you can add salt at this point or you can leave it unsalted. Save the butter in the refrigerator, or spread it on toast immediately.
